Need Is A Road

If you can’t get the list done

If you can’t make the magic

If you can’t savor the season

If your memories are tragic

If you feel trapped in the now

And long to go back

If you feel trapped in the chaos

And worry you’ll crack

If the movies and music

Seem to collide

With the emptiness you feel

With the loneliness inside

At Christmastime (and anytime),

I need you to know

That neediness isn’t a dead end—

It’s actually a road

Jesus came for the poor

Ones with hearts that break

He came for the captives

For those left in grief’s wake

Maybe that’s your story

Maybe that’s you

If so, here’s the glory

If so, here’s the good news:

Imagine a limitless God

Wrapped in power and light

Who set aside heavenly robes

And stepped into our night

Hear the sound

As it pierces the sky

The indignity of birth

The vulnerability of a cry

Why would this God

Deem to become like us?

Why would a limitless God

Come down to the dust?

He called Himself the Way

And I want you to know

The Way takes dead-end neediness

And makes it a road

He said we’d have trouble

(And look — we clearly do)

In our trouble he said, “take heart”

Then told us something true:

He said He overcame the world

That’s why He came

So that anyone who called to him

Would have salvation in His name

He hears your sound

As it pierces the sky

The indignities in your life

The vulnerability of your cry

So if you are needy right now

Maybe that’s what you need

Maybe that’s the thing

that will help you to see

Christ was born

He was born for you

He is with you in this pain

There’s no pain He doesn’t know too

The need is the road

The one on which you lay

You cannot get up

You cannot know the way

That’s why He comes to you

Thats why He picks you up

That’s why He wraps you in His robe

That’s why He drinks your cup

Imagine how He runs to you

Imagine the love on His face

You can’t do anything for Him

You can only settle into grace

This Christmas if you’re needy

Remember it’s a road

Your Savior is born for you

And you are not alone
