Christian Nonfiction for 2020

I love to read, but man, I have had a TIME trying to read this year. Between the ages and needs of my kids and the, well, world, it’s been difficult to find time to be still, and then when I’m still, it’s hard to focus. Often the words seem to bounce around on the page, or fall off the page entirely and make a mess. So rude.

Nevertheless, I’ve truly benefited from the books I’ve read (or the many that I’m in the middle of)—particularly this little batch of Christian nonfiction. Each of these is a 2020 title, and it’s the kind of thing where the author, of course, had no idea the context to which her book would enter the world, and yet somehow, the content offered precise ministry to my 2020-weary heart.

If you’re looking for Christian nonfiction to minister to your 2020-weary heart, here are four recommendations for you. (Affiliate links used.)

If your motherhood is characterized by that subterranean buzzing of failure + stress

As frazzled as I felt while reading this, I could not believe how well Maggie could cut through the noise of my mind and offer me gospel truth. She is the best friend who will shoot you straight, and she does it in a way that is truly life-giving. If you are burdened by all those unspoken rules of motherhood (UGH! SO MANY!), let Maggie dismantling your thinking and point you to a better way.

If the fear won’t go away, and you’re not sure what to do

Kristen says right from the get-go that this book is not designed to make you fearless—and that was exactly when I decided I could trust her. If you want actual equipping to navigate fear in a God-honoring way rather than the “rub some dirt on it” kind of counsel we commonly hear, Kristen nails it. Also, the book is truly GORGEOUS—super gift-able.

If you’ve been trained to think stories should tie up with a bow, but yours won’t

This is the book I can’t stop thinking about and assigning to people like I’m their teacher and they owe me a book report on Friday. KJ counsels her reader on every page with sharp, smart, compassionate writing. I’m carrying her perspective and lessons in my heart and praying they take root.

If you need encouragement + equipping to keep going

This lovely book is such a balm, because it helped me recognize the beauty and profound importance of putting one foot in front of the other in pursuit of the Lord and in service to others. It can all feel so… mundane, but Glenna will help you see the worth in tiny, everyday acts of faithfulness. After reading, I feel deeply encouraged to press on.
