Little One: A Poem For the One We'll One Day Adopt
/There’s a whole room set aside for you—
The other two are glad to share.
And right next to the kitchen table,
we've stubbornly kept your chair.
On the wall, crayon drawings,
Just for you and scribbled with love
By a boy and girl who like you already
And say you can play with their stuff.
The tiny clothes are washed and ready,
Bigger ones, too, because who knows?
It’s too wonderful for us to see just yet,
And the wait seems hazy and slow.
But in the fog, one thing is clear,
Of one thing we’re very sure:
We’ll honor your story, not claim “You are ours,”
Let’s say instead, “We are yours.”
We are yours, little one,
And we admit that’s not much.
Still, we promise to love you a lot.
We promise to like you a bunch.
We know we’re not all you need,
(No person ever is, we’ve learned)
But we know the Satisfier of all things,
The true Parent for whom your heart yearns.
We’re so glad to tell you about His ways,
That it’s His pen that writes this story.
That all these loops and plot twists—
they’re all purposed for certain glory.
It’s something you can remember when things feel dark,
When your story feels fraught with pain:
It was written by One who brings beauty from ashes,
Who transforms loss to glorious gain.
One day we’ll know you, little one,
Your face no longer a dream.
We worry that day is far away;
We worry over all we don’t see.
But what mystifies us is plain to Him,
and we find firm delight in something true:
That He prepares a place for His children,
Like we’ve prepared for you.
Each day of your life is written in His book,
And we can’t wait to see,
How He’ll weave together your days with ours—
And call it Family.
